Growing in greenhouses
We offer a thorough technology description for growing tomatoes in polyethylene greenhouses. This technology ensures high yield and realization of the produce in the period - May - June, when tomato prices are highest.
METHOD FOR GROWING TOMATOES IN HEATED AND NON-HEATED GREENHOUSES
Chief Specialist-Agornomist VASSIL ANGELOV
Suitable sorts:
PREKOS F1, KALINA F1, PARRIS F1, BONUS BG F1, DORINA F1, BALKAN F1
Dates for sowing:
- heated greenhouses 18-20 December
- non-heated greenhouses 5-7 January
The seeds are sown in small plates, filled with peat substartum and are placed at a temperature of 25 - 28 degrees C for sprouting. During this period the main carefor the seeds is concerned with keeping the giventemperature and the constant humidity of the substartum. Usually after the first watering after the sowing and thefollowing covering of the plates with paper or polyethilene, until the sprouting (5-7 days), no additional watering is required. At the very beginning of the sprouting, the polyethylene foil (or paper) is removed and maximum light is ensured. After the massive sprouting - around 75%, the temperature is reduced. During the day it is kept at 18 - 20 degrees C and during the night - with 3 - 4 degrees less. Watering should be done carefully as the humidity of the substratum and the air is kept at lower values.
When the sedlings forms two complete leafs - cross-fertilization phase, the thinning out begins. This is done in plastic
plant pots or small buckets filled with a soil-fertilizer mixture or peat substratum.
Thinning out: In the heated greenhouses, the process starts around the 14 of January, and with the non-heated greenhouses
- around 2 - 3 February. 4400 plants areneeded for 1 dca, including 10% reserves.
The seedling is cultivated in heated greenhouses with temperatures of: 20 - 22 degrees C during the day, and 16 - 17 degrees C during the night. It is desirable that the plant pots are placed onto insulating pads, which will prevent contact with the soil and the temperature conditions for the growth of the root system will be improved.
During the production of the seedlings, it is recommended a double-feeding with HORTIGROW 5-50-20 x 3 g / 1 liter water, put in during the watering, and also a weekly sprinkling with N-EXTRA x 2 g / 1 liter water. This will guarantee the obtaining of healthy, dark green and having a powerful root system seedlings. The buckets or the plant pots should not be over damped and they should be watched closely for diseases and bugs. There should be regular ventilation and there should be a gradual advance to temper the seedlings.
Planting at a permanent place: The plants are planted at a permanent place around 15 - 20 February for the heated greenhouses and during the second half of March for non-heated greenhouses with a double foil. In order to create a more powerful root system, larger and flush fruit, it is recommended that the first bunch is removed during the "button" phase.
Scheme of planting: The proffered schemes for planting are either in furrows 75/30 cm or two-roll band 90+50/30 cm. 4000 plants are ensured for 1 dca.
Cultivation: During the vegetation, the plants are grown in on stem. When complex cluster are formed, they should be reduced to 5-6 fruit. In order to avoid the collapse of the flowers at the wrist and to improve the pollination of the flower, different stimulators are used or bombuses (fertilizing bees). The vegetation top is removed 1-2 leafs above 4-th wrist. The tomatoes are earthed up regulatory the first should be after the plant has stable roots, and every other - in every two weeks. The gray rotting is the most important disease that the plants should be prevented from. In order to avoid his disease, it is necessary that there is periodical ventilation and cleaning and removal of the leafs if they become too many. At the beginning, the 1-2 leafs that are at the bottom are removed, and after the fruit from the first bunch become clear, all leafs by the first bunch are removed. Depending on the situation, some leafs from the upper levels may also be removed.
Feeding up: During the vegetation the tomatoes are regularly fed with mineral fertilizers. HORTIGROW fertilizers are recommended, added with a dropping system following the scheme:
Planting the seedlings until blossoming of the first bunch:
2 feedings per week 1.5 kg HORTIGROW 5-50-20 / 1 dca
Over-blossoming of the first bunch until the start of harvest:
9 feedings every 7-10 days with 4 kg / dca HORTIGROW in the following order:
1-st 20-20-20 6-th 15-5-30
2-nd 5-50-20 7-th 20-20-20
3-rd 20-20-20 8-th 15-5-30
4-th 15-5-30 9-th 20-20-20
5-th 20-20-20
During the harvest: 9 feedings every 7 days with 4 kg / dca HORTIGROW in the following order:
1-st 5-5-40-2 6-th 20-20-20
2-nd 20-20-20 7-th 5-5-40-2
3-rd 15-5-30 8-th 15-5-30
4-th 20-20-20 9-th 5-5-40-2
5-th 5-5-40-2
Harvest: In the heated greenhouses, the harvest starts in the beginning of May and if 4 bunches are snapped off, it ends around the 10-th of June. In the non-heated greenhouses the harvest starts during the second half of May and ends in the beginning of July. Depending on the sort and the conditions of cultivating, the production varies from 2.5 to 3.5 kg per plant.
Cultivating as a pre-culture:
The hybrids mentioned above - PREKOS F1, KALINA F1, PARRIS F1, BONUS BG F1, DORINA F1 are also suitable for autumn cultivation as a pre-culture. In this sense, very good results are given by the hybrids GEO F1 and GEO SUPER F1, KAMENA GEO F1,which are distinguished with their harder fruits and possibility for longer preservation.
The sowing of the seeds is done during the second half of June, or in the beginning of July. The first harvest are correspondingly during the second half of October or in the beginning of November.
KAMENA GEO F1 is suitable for long cultivation.
